How can a Psychologist help?

As individuals we have different experiences and we cope with life difficulties in different ways. The same is true following Bariatric surgery. This is a lifetime commitment to your own self. Every individual is different, and it varies from person to person.

A psychologist can help you to:

  • Understand your problems better.
  • Be more positive and motivated towards weight loss journey
  • Have a better quality of life post-surgery.

What happens at my first appointment?

The first appointment is called an assessment and your chance to tell the psychologist about the difficulties you may be having. In order to try and get a good understanding of your concerns, the psychologist will also ask you about your life in general and your past experiences.

What if I do not have a psychological problem, do I still have to meet the psychologist?

The psychologist’s purpose is not only to find underlying problems and conflicts that might have caused you to become obese but the main purpose is to make you mindful. The evaluation helps you to have a positive outlook towards a new beginning. For instance, some people are fearful of the surgery itself and may be able to benefit from psychological intervention.

What psychological conditions would cause problems with weight loss surgery?
